Comic Con Time Again!!!

It is that time of year again when we mere mortals look on with envy at all the shiny hijinks happening in a little place called San Diego. This is a little post when I sum up some of the things I like the sound of so far.

The Originals

The thing that set The Originals apart from a lot shows with supernatural elements is the tight plotting of an almost Shakespearean ongoing tragedy with envy, jealousy and betrayal all playing major roles. The second season trailer dropped at Comic Con and things look to be going on in a very similar vein. Some of the commenters have raised concerned about the sheer amount going on. I agree that it might be a problem but I’m going to give the writers credit that they have things planned out and that the different antagonists seem to form into two or three factions dedicated to challenging Klaus and Elijah.

Arrow

I love the world that Arrow built last season though I was getting a little tired of all that Olicity baiting that was going on it was like they wanted to go toe to toe with Supernatural in the ship baiting stakes which is a tall order. Last season ended with us finally getting off the island and though as a rule I hate flashbacks I understand and accept them as a device on Arrow. An issue I had with the trailer is it seems like we are going to have to wait to the back end for Thea to come back after her training. The only other thing is the business side of things which was a little boring for me last time.

Anyway those are the things that I really enjoyed from the coverage TV wise. I know there is Game Of Thrones stuff but I’m not a rabid frothing at the mouth fan of the TV show I just sit quietly waiting for the next book mostly. The movie stuff doesn’t really matter to me as much as TV shows. However you can’t really talk seriously about Comic Con without featuring some pictures of the action.

TV REVIEW: True Blood "Fuck The Pain Away"

Season 6

Episode 5

Fuck The Pain Away

Yeah that is a very weird title but never mind as we have an episode to recap. Well I wasn't sure it would ever happen but we got some interesting background to Sookie’s story though it came across a little confusing. When Sookie’s dad was arguing with her mom about killing Sookie it made it sound like Sookie was maybe a baby or a little older but I am sure they had shown in the past Sookie being five or six at least and listening to her mom’s fear of her. Either way though it reveals that Sookie’s Pops be cray cray and that Warlow is a creepy stalker that makes Edward Cullen look like a happy go lucky kind of guy but apparently women dig that.

Eric steps up in a big way and goes to Vamp Camp seemingly in order to break out Pam and maybe if he can be bothered Tara and Jessica (that bit made me chuckle). Poor Jessica is reeling from her spree killing of the fae hybrids and goes to Jason for support resulting in one of the sweetest scenes on True Blood, unfortunately crazy Sara Newland had just fucked Jason for Jesus and she storms out and somehow manages to rescind Jessica’s invitation. By all the rules of Vampire Lore I know only the resident of a house can do that so I am than a little confused. Anyway Jessica gets scooped up by the vamp patrol as a result of Sara calling them.

Yay we have more Lafayette time but no because we could all see where this was going I mean how many times has Lafayette been body jacked? I guess that there really wasn't another way but it felt awkward and horribly telegraphed.

We get Warlow flashbacks to Fae in loin cloths and the story of how he was turned by Lillith. Something interesting is that someone told Lillith of the Fae and that they would be vampires’ salvation. We pretty much know what happened as Niall mentioned it before the extra is how exactly Warlow managed to kill his Maker.

Meanwhile back at the bar, you know where Sookie once worked AGES ago Terry calls on an old army buddy to well you know off him. That seems like a hell of a lead in but when he reveals that he killed their comrade he just signs up. I don’t know if this is about understanding the hell they went through together or his silent rage of the needless murder of a friend anyway this guy used to be a sniper and promises that Terry won’t know when the shot is coming which is honourable I guess. 

This whole thing is very messed up. We start to see more of what happens at Vamp Camp and some of it is pretty darn disturbing, though the survival game nonsense with Eric was mostly funny.

We can’t talk about this episode without talking about Sheriff Andy and the Fae Hybrid that Lived. That was a hell of a scene Andy busting into Bill’s house by himself with a pump action to save his children, they may be like 3 days old but that didn’t seem to matter and when he scooped up his girl and took her out. I wasn’t a fan of the fae daughters storyline but now that there is one of them hopefully it will suck less.

The Week That Was

Things have been reasonably busy with 2 job interviews to prepare for and attend. As of writing this I have heard from the second of the two interviews attended and it was unsuccessful. Yeah it brings you down but there isn’t a lot more that can be done other than moving onto the next attempt.

TV News

So The L.A. Complex has 2 episodes each airing this week and the next to finish out the season. I checked out this week’s offering and was blown away by them. The thing about The L.A. Complex for those of you who know it is that it can be a little downbeat and even depressing a lot of the time, the first few episodes of the first season are good evidence of this. I really hope that there will be a further season especially with some gossip that Alicia (Chelan Simmons) might be back steaming up our screens.

I am definitely looking forward to next week’s final episodes.

Haven is BACK! The first episode was a bit below par if you ask me though especially as I remember its beginning, aka the end of the previous season’s finale being very different as in Wuornos fired a shot which got removed in this episode. Other than that the idea of aliens and the ultimate reason for their appearance seemed a little weak. The rest of season trailer at the end though showed that there was some serious plot development coming

TV Review: Continuum

Continuum is a Canadian Sci-Fi Show currently being shown on the Canadian channel Showcase. It consists of a 10 episode season and stars Rachel Nichols and Victor Webster known for Alias and Mutant X respectively.

PLOT

Vancouver City Protective Services (CPS) Protector Kiera Cameron (Rachel Nichols) is transported from the year 2077 to 2012 when a group of terrorists from her time escapes execution by fleeing to present day. In order to track them down and stop them from endangering the past, Kiera joins the local police force and uses the skills of a young tech genius, Alec Sadler.

WHAT I THINK (so far)

So I’ve only seen 1 episode so this is more of a preview than a full fledged review as the season is set to be 10 episodes long. However what I have seen so far looks intriguing, Rachel Nichols as the star is an interesting choice somewhat unexpected but she is well known and if someone like Anna Silk can carry if off then Nichols shouldn’t have any problems.

The story is an interesting one and is clearly far more about the politics than the cool electrical stingers that Kiera Cameron has installed in her body. The view of the future seems a somewhat oppressive one where corporations run the world and countries no longer mean what they used to. So it is clear that they would like us the viewer to be unsure whether or not the terrorists are not terrorists but instead freedom fighters.

I only have a few questions on how it can be that easy to say you’re  a cop and not have anyone notice you’re lying. I am thinking though the hacker might be able to firm up her back story. Overall it looks like an interesting cerebral entry into the Sci-Fi market which at the moment is all too thin on the ground. Let’s hope it goes the way of Lost Girl and not the way of Endgame.

TV POST: The US TV Off-Season Cometh

So MTV was running a competition/challenge via YouTube to get their Official Trailer for Teen Wolf Season  Two to 2 million hits. I have been checking back from time to time but slacked off recently busy with job chasing and fun with Diablo III installation problems. They recently hit their target and released the first 10 minutes of the new season on their website which strangely I could view even from the UK (albeit with a terrible framerate) I have presented it below from a friendly YouTube user.



Teen Wolf of course is not the only show with a mighty marketing mammoth behind it. True Blood is stepping things up with a series of posters and of course a trailer for the new season.

I don't know which one I will enjoy more. Teen Wolf was really good last season but too many shows trip up in the second season while True Blood's last season was absolutely woeful in my opinion and I can only hope this gets a lot better.
